What are garden gyms?

Garden gyms are dedicated fitness spaces constructed within the grounds of a property, typically in the garden. It is a detached, purpose-built structure designed to accommodate exercise equipment and workout areas, providing a private and convenient location for physical activity.

Garden gym rooms can be tailored to suit individual fitness needs and preferences, with features such as insulation, ventilation, and electrical connections for optimal functionality.

A garden gym offers a practical alternative to public gyms or indoor home gyms, allowing users to enjoy their workouts in a serene, natural setting while saving time and money on gym memberships.

Benefits of Having Garden Gyms

One of the primary benefits of having a garden gym is the convenience and privacy it provides. By creating a dedicated fitness space on your property, you can exercise in comfort without the distractions or self-consciousness often associated with public gyms. A garden gym allows you to design a workout area tailored to your specific needs while eliminating gym membership fees and travel costs.

A garden gym also promotes a healthier lifestyle by making exercise more accessible and enjoyable. Surrounded by the tranquillity of nature, you can experience the positive effects of physical activity on both your body and mind. The time saved on commuting to and from the gym can be used more efficiently, leading to a more balanced daily routine.

Lastly, a garden gym adds value and appeal to your property. This dedicated space not only enhances your living environment but also serves as a versatile area that can be repurposed for other activities, such as a yoga studio, meditation room, or workshop. In essence, a garden gym investment contributes to an improved lifestyle and overall well-being.

Why have garden gyms?

MOST GARDEN GYMS UNDER 2.5M HIGH IN SUSSEX DO NOT NEED PLANNING PERMISSION

To be considered “permitted development”, and not require planning permission, the garden gym needs to be:

  • Placed less than 2m from the boundary of the property
  • The maximum overall height should not exceed 2.5m from ground level
  • Has an internal floor area of less than 30m

If you meet these criteria then garden gyms are generally exempt from planning and building regulations. With our bespoke garden room designs we can help you get the most out of the space you have for your dream room.

If you plan on using your garden gym as regular sleeping accommodation however you will need planning permission. This is because any sleep accommodation is required to meet building regulations.

WHEN WOULD I NEED PLANNING IN SUSSEX?

You would also need planning if your garden gym stands in front of your house facing the main road, if it takes up more than half the land around the original house, or if it’s built on the property of a listed building or conservation area.

If you are not sure of the requirements in Sussex apply to your build, or would like some more detailed advice we recommend you take a look at the government’s online planning portal.

Planning permission for garden gyms in Sussex is an important step to consider when looking to build a new structure in your garden. Before you begin the process, it’s important to find out if you need planning permission from the local authority and what other requirements may be necessary.

Generally speaking, if your garden gym will be higher than two metres, it’s likely that planning permission will be required. In Sussex, this is usually done through the city council who will review all applications.
